The NBA is back and put on a show in Disney World on Thursday (July 30). In the first official games since the league shut down on March 11 because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Utah Jazz faced off against the New Orleans Pelicans, while the Los Angeles Lakers took on their city rival, the Los Angeles Clippers.
All eyes were on Pelicans rookie Zion Williamson, who was scheduled to play just 15 minutes in the first game. Williamson scored 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting but did not have a rebound. He also committed three fouls and had two turnovers.
Williamson was forced to watch the final 5:23 minutes of the game from the bench as the Pelicans lost 106-104.
In the nightcap, the Lakers and Clippers picked up their rivalry right where it left off before the season was suspended. LeBron James put up 16 points with 7 rebounds and two steals. He came alive late in the game, scoring or assisting on 13 of the Lakers' 27 fourth-quarter points. He grabbed his own rebound to score the go-ahead shot with just 12.8 seconds left in the game and then played lockdown defense on Paul George to close out a 103-101 victory.
