Student Dead, Officer Injured In Shooting At Tennessee High School

One student is dead and an officer seriously injured after a shooting at a Tennessee high school Monday afternoon (April 12), Fox 17 reports.

Knoxville Police originally responded to reports of a potentially armed individual at Austin-East Magnet High School around 3:15 p.m. After the suspect refused to leave a school restroom, officers began to enter the area. That is when the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation claims the suspect opened fire, striking one officer while another returned fire.

"The subject was pronounced dead at the scene and has since been identified as a student," the TBI said in a press release. "The officer who was shot was transported to a local hospital for treatment."

No other injuries were reported. On Tuesday, Knoxville Police identified the injured officer as Adam Wilson, a 20-year veteran of the department.

"KPD Officer Adam Wilson is recovering from surgery after being wounded in yesterday's shooting incident at Austin-East Magnet High School," the department posted on Twitter. "Wilson, a 20-year veteran of KPD, was currently serving as the School Resource Officer at Austin-East. We are grateful for the well wishes."

Classes at the school were canceled Tuesday and Wednesday and counselors have been made available for students and staff. The Tennessee Department of Education released a statement Monday following the incident, pledging its support for the school.

"As details continue to emerge, our thoughts are with Austin East Magnet High School and those school community members who have been affected by the shooting that took place this afternoon," the TDOE wrote. "The department stands ready to support."

No other information, such as the identity of the student, has been released. The investigation remains ongoing.
