A sweet treat perfect for cooling down in the warmer weather is being recalled from stores in Tennessee after it was determined it could pose a risk for a "serious" infection.
Tropicale Foods has issued a recall of 5,224 units of the Helados Mexico Mini Cream Variety Pack after testing on the mango ice cream bars indicate they could be contaminated with salmonella. The company is conducting an investigation into what caused the contamination to prevent any future issues from occurring.
According to a recall notice posted by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, salmonella could cause "serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems." Symptoms often include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, but more severe illnesses, such as arterial infections and endocarditis, could occur in rare circumstances.
The recalled product has a best-by date of "MO Best By 10/11/2025," located on the bottom of the box, and was sold in retail locations all across the country including in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Wisconsin, West Virginia and Washington D.C. as well as some locations in Europe.
Anyone who has purchased the affected product is urged not to consume it and to dispose of it. As of March 30, no illnesses have been reported.
